Apartment Vastu: A Practical Guide for Flats

Can you apply Vastu to a modern flat? Yes. CA Shikha provides practical apartment Vastu tips, from main doors to common walls, without requiring demolition.

“Shikha, how can Vastu apply to my apartment? I’m on the 12th floor, I don’t touch the ground, and I can’t change the builder’s layout!”

This is the most common concern I hear from clients in Bengaluru. It’s a valid point. You cannot control the overarching Vastu of the entire high-rise building. But Vastu Shastra operates on micro and macro levels. Just as a city has its own energy grid, your 3BHK flat has its own independent energy field (Vastu Purush Mandala) the moment you put a main door on it.

We don’t need to break walls. We just need to manage the elements inside your specific four walls. Let’s look at how to logically balance a modern apartment.

Macro vs. Micro Vastu

  • Macro Vastu: This involves the whole apartment complex—the main entrance gate, the location of the swimming pool, and the clubhouse. While important, it affects the community as a whole, not just you.
  • Micro Vastu: This is your individual flat. The exact direction your flat faces, where your specific kitchen is located, and where you sleep. This is what directly impacts your finances and health. This is what we focus on.

What to Check Before Buying a Flat

If you are currently hunting for an apartment, keep this checklist handy:

  1. The Shape: Ensure the flat is as close to a square or rectangle as possible. Avoid flats that are L-shaped or have major “cut” corners in the North-East or South-West.
  2. The Main Door: Check the facing direction using a proper Compass standing inside the flat looking out. Avoid doors in the exact South-West or extreme North-West corners.
  3. The Kitchen: Ensure the kitchen is not in the North-East (Water zone). This is the hardest defect to remedy in an apartment.
  4. The Bathrooms: Avoid flats where a toilet is located in the exact center (Brahmasthan) or the North-East corner.

Remedying Common Flat Defects

In modern architecture, builder floor plans rarely achieve 100% Vastu compliance. Here is how I use non-destructive Vastu remedies to fix common apartment issues:

1. Shared Walls with Neighbors

If your living room wall is shared with your neighbor’s bathroom, you are absorbing their waste energy.

  • Remedy: Keep a bowl of sea salt near that wall or use specific sound-blocking and Vastu-blocking paints to seal the energy.

2. High-Rise Balconies

Large sliding glass doors in balconies can let energy escape too quickly.

  • Remedy: If the balcony is in the South or West, keep thick, heavy curtains drawn during the afternoon to block the harsh infrared rays. Keep a few heavy potted plants in the South-West balcony to ground the energy.

3. No Pooja Room Space

Builders rarely provide a dedicated Mandir space.

  • Remedy: Use a wooden shelf in the North-East of your living room. Read my complete guide on Pooja Room Vastu for small apartments.

Vastu FAQs

Does Vastu apply to apartments and flats? Yes, absolutely. While you cannot change the overall building’s architecture, Vastu applies to your individual unit (micro-Vastu). The energy inside your flat is what affects you.

Is a high-rise apartment bad for Vastu? No. The height of the apartment doesn’t necessarily make it bad. However, apartments on higher floors are farther from the Earth element, so grounding remedies like indoor plants and salt are highly recommended.

How do I find the center (Brahmasthan) of my apartment? You find the center by looking at the exact floor plan of your specific unit, excluding common areas, balconies, or lift shafts. A Vastu expert uses an AutoCAD drawing to find the exact center of gravity.

Can I fix Vastu defects in a rented apartment? Yes! You don’t need to break walls. You can use color therapy, space purifiers, mirrors, and specific metal strips to correct the energy in a rented space without permanent changes.

What if my apartment entrance is in the South-West? A South-West entrance is a major defect, but it can be blocked using a brass metal strip on the threshold and yellow color therapy. Do not use mirrors to reflect it.

Are L-shaped apartments Vastu compliant? L-shaped or irregularly shaped apartments usually have ‘cut’ or ‘missing’ corners. These cuts can be remedied using mirrors (to virtually extend the space) or specific elemental colors to balance the missing zone.

Where should the shoe rack be kept in a flat? Keep the shoe rack outside the main door if possible, or immediately to the side upon entering. Never keep it directly facing the main door or in the North-East corner.

Can a balcony be considered an extension? Yes, if a balcony is enclosed or heavily used, it becomes part of the Vastu grid. A balcony in the North or East is excellent, while a heavy balcony in the South-West should be closed off.

What if the kitchen and toilet are adjacent in my flat? This is a common issue in modern flats. You can fix this elemental clash by placing a Vastu energy partition or pasting a specific metal strip on the shared wall.

Is it bad if the lift is directly opposite my apartment door? Yes, a lift directly facing the door acts as a constant energy drain (like a downward spiral). You can remedy this with a Pakua mirror or specific protective symbols above your door.
