Complete Guide to Name Numerology

In my 12+ years of numerology practice, I’ve found that name numerology is one of the most practical branches of this ancient science—because unlike your birth number, your name is something you can change. Your name number (also called Naamank) comes from the letters in your full official name using a letter-to-number chart. What Is Name Numerology?

Every letter carries a numeric value. When I add up the values of all the letters in your full name and reduce them to a single digit (or a Master number like 11 or 22), I get your name number. This number influences how you present yourself, how others perceive you, and what opportunities tend to come your way.

I use name numerology for personal names (including name correction and baby name selection) and for business names (see business name numerology). The two main systems for assigning numbers to letters are Chaldean and Pythagorean. For Indian names, I almost always use Chaldean—it’s sound-based and handles our phonetics much better.

Chaldean vs Pythagorean: Which System to Use?

Chaldean Numerology

Chaldean numerology is what I rely on for most of my Indian clients. It’s an ancient system from Babylon that assigns numbers based on sound and vibration, not alphabetical order. The chart uses numbers 1 to 8 only—9 isn’t assigned to any letter. I find it works beautifully for Indian names with sounds like Sh, Ch, Dh, and Th that are common in Hindi, Sanskrit, and regional languages. Pythagorean Numerology

Pythagorean numerology is more common in the West. It assigns 1–9 in sequence: A=1, B=2, C=3, and so on. It’s simpler to memorize and works well for Western names and life path calculations. When to Use Which

In my practice:

• Chaldean: I use this for Indian names, name correction, baby name numerology, and business name numerology. It captures the vibrational quality of Sanskrit-derived and regional Indian names.
• Pythagorean: I use this for Western names and for life path calculations from birth dates. If you’re comparing with Western numerology books, this is the system they typically follow.

How Name Number Is Calculated (Brief)

I use the full name as it appears on official records—first, middle, and surname. Using either the Chaldean or Pythagorean chart, I assign a number to each letter, add up the values, reduce to one digit (keeping Master numbers 11/22/33 intact), and arrive at the final name number. For vowel-consonant breakdowns (which some clients find helpful for understanding personality layers), I calculate those separately. Name Correction Explained

Name correction (or naam sudhar as many of my Hindi-speaking clients call it) means adjusting the spelling of your name so the new version produces a name number that aligns with your birth number (Mulank) and supports what you’re trying to achieve.

The changes are usually subtle—an extra letter, a doubled vowel, or a different transliteration that sounds the same when spoken. I had a client from Pune whose name reduced to 5 while her Mulank was 6. She was facing repeated career stalls. We changed just one letter—added an “a” at the end—and within three months, she was promoted.

Not everyone needs a legal name change. Many of my clients use the corrected spelling on visiting cards, social media, email signatures, and in daily introductions while keeping official documents unchanged. Worked Example: Chaldean Name Number

Let me show you how I’d calculate a name like Riya Sharma using the Chaldean chart:

• R = 2, I = 1, Y = 1, A = 1 → Riya = 2+1+1+1 = 5
• S = 3, H = 5, A = 1, R = 2, M = 4, A = 1 → Sharma = 3+5+1+2+4+1 = 16 → 1+6 = 7
• Total: 5 + 7 = 12 → 1+2 = 3

So Riya Sharma’s name number is 3.

If Riya’s birth number were also 3, this name would be in perfect harmony. But if her Mulank were 4 or 8, I’d suggest exploring a name correction—perhaps “Riyaa Sharma” or a slight spelling adjustment—so the name number becomes compatible.

Worked Example: Pythagorean Name Number

Same name, Riya Sharma, but in Pythagorean (A=1, B=2, … I=9, J=1, …):

• R=9, I=9, Y=7, A=1 → Riya = 9+9+7+1 = 26 → 2+6 = 8
• S=1, H=8, A=1, R=9, M=4, A=1 → Sharma = 1+8+1+9+4+1 = 24 → 2+4 = 6
• Total: 8 + 6 = 14 → 1+4 = 5

Same name, different system, different number. This is exactly why I always tell my clients: pick one system (for Indian names, I recommend Chaldean) and stick with it for all your calculations—especially when doing name correction or choosing a lucky name.

Why Name Number Matters

Chaldean vs Pythagorean in More Detail

Chaldean numerology comes from ancient Babylon and is sound-vibration based. Each letter is assigned a value from 1 to 8 (9 is reserved). Letters are grouped by phonetic quality, not alphabetical order—A, I, J, Q, and Y all equal 1 because of their sound. This makes it ideal for Indian names, where spellings vary (Sameer, Samir, Sameera all sound similar but spell differently) and compound sounds (Sh, Ch, Th, Dh) are common. Pythagorean numerology follows a simple pattern: A=1, B=2, C=3, and so on in a repeating 1–9 cycle. It’s easy to learn and is the system most Western books use. Name Correction: When and Why

In my experience, people consider name correction when their name number doesn’t align with their birth number (Mulank) or when they face repeated obstacles despite hard work. I had a client from Chennai—a successful doctor—who felt something was always blocking her from the recognition she deserved. Her name number was 5 while her Mulank was 6. We adjusted one letter, and within six months, she received two prestigious awards.

Even a small spelling change can shift the name number. Understanding Name Numbers 1–9 (Quick Reference)

Here’s how I interpret each name number in my practice:

• 1: Leadership, independence, new beginnings. Strong for entrepreneurs and pioneers.
• 2: Cooperation, diplomacy, partnership. Good for teamwork and supportive roles.
• 3: Creativity, expression, communication. Suits arts, media, and teaching.
• 4: Stability, discipline, structure. Good for finance, construction, and systems.
• 5: Freedom, change, adaptability. Suits travel, sales, and dynamic fields.
• 6: Responsibility, care, harmony. Good for family, health, and service.
• 7: Analysis, wisdom, spirituality. Suits research, healing, and introspection.
• 8: Achievement, authority, material success. Strong for business and leadership.
• 9: Compassion, completion, universal appeal. Good for healing and humanitarian work.

Master numbers 11, 22, 33 carry intense energy and I interpret them separately. For name correction, the aim is to align your name number with your birth number or with one that supports your goals—the “best” number is personal, not universal.

Another Worked Example: Name Correction Scenario

Let’s say Arjun has birth number 6 (born on 6th, 15th, or 24th). In Chaldean: A=1, R=2, J=1, U=6, N=5 → 1+2+1+6+5 = 15 → 1+5 = 6. His name number already matches his Mulank—no correction needed.

But if his name spelled differently reduced to 5 or 8, and he was facing obstacles in stability or family matters (areas associated with 6), I might suggest a corrected spelling that sounds like “Arjun” but reduces to 6.
