What is Name Numerology?
Name Numerology (also called Name Number or Naamank in Hindi) is the study of how the letters in your name influence your personality, behavior, and life path. Each letter corresponds to a number, and the sum of these numbers reveals your name's vibrational energy.
Key Name Numerology Terms:
- Name Number / Naamank (नामांक): Calculated from the letters in your name. Shows how your name influences your personality and destiny.
- Name Correction: Changing your name to align with favorable numbers for better luck and success.
- Lucky Name: A name that has a favorable number matching your birth number or life path number.
- Chaldean Chart: An ancient numerology system assigning numbers 1-8 to letters (no number 9).
- Pythagorean Chart: A modern numerology system assigning numbers 1-9 to letters in sequence.

Why Name Numerology Matters
Your name is called thousands of times throughout your life, creating a vibrational pattern that influences:
- • Your personality traits and behavior
- • Career opportunities and success
- • Relationships and compatibility
- • Health and well-being
- • Overall luck and fortune
In my 12+ years of numerology practice, I’ve found that name numerology is one of the most practical branches of this ancient science—because unlike your birth number, your name is something you can change. Your name number (also called Naamank) comes from the letters in your full official name using a letter-to-number chart. I’ve worked with clients from Bangalore to Mumbai who came to me feeling stuck in their careers or relationships, and a simple spelling adjustment shifted everything for them.
This guide covers how name numerology works, which system I recommend for Indian names (spoiler: Chaldean), how to calculate your name number, and when name correction actually makes sense. You’ll also find links to my detailed pages on how to calculate name number, Chaldean chart, Pythagorean chart, name correction, lucky names, baby name numerology, business name numerology, and alphabet numerology.

What Is Name Numerology?
Every letter carries a numeric value. When I add up the values of all the letters in your full name and reduce them to a single digit (or a Master number like 11 or 22), I get your name number. This number influences how you present yourself, how others perceive you, and what opportunities tend to come your way.
I use name numerology for personal names (including name correction and baby name selection) and for business names (see business name numerology). The two main systems for assigning numbers to letters are Chaldean and Pythagorean. For Indian names, I almost always use Chaldean—it’s sound-based and handles our phonetics much better.
Chaldean vs Pythagorean: Which System to Use?
Chaldean Numerology
Chaldean numerology is what I rely on for most of my Indian clients. It’s an ancient system from Babylon that assigns numbers based on sound and vibration, not alphabetical order. The chart uses numbers 1 to 8 only—9 isn’t assigned to any letter. I find it works beautifully for Indian names with sounds like Sh, Ch, Dh, and Th that are common in Hindi, Sanskrit, and regional languages. For the full chart, see my Chaldean numerology chart page.
Typical Chaldean values: A, I, J, Q, Y = 1; B, K, R = 2; C, G, L, S = 3; D, M, T = 4; E, H, N, X = 5; U, V, W = 6; O, Z = 7; F, P = 8. (No letter = 9.)
Pythagorean Numerology
Pythagorean numerology is more common in the West. It assigns 1–9 in sequence: A=1, B=2, C=3, and so on. It’s simpler to memorize and works well for Western names and life path calculations. When clients come to me with Western first names or want to compare systems, I’ll calculate both. For the full grid, see my Pythagorean chart page.
When to Use Which
In my practice:
- Chaldean: I use this for Indian names, name correction, baby name numerology, and business name numerology. It captures the vibrational quality of Sanskrit-derived and regional Indian names.
- Pythagorean: I use this for Western names and for life path calculations from birth dates. If you’re comparing with Western numerology books, this is the system they typically follow.
I often calculate the same name in both systems to see which resonates more with a client’s actual experience. For step-by-step instructions, see how to calculate name number.
How Name Number Is Calculated (Brief)
I use the full name as it appears on official records—first, middle, and surname. Using either the Chaldean or Pythagorean chart, I assign a number to each letter, add up the values, reduce to one digit (keeping Master numbers 11/22/33 intact), and arrive at the final name number. For vowel-consonant breakdowns (which some clients find helpful for understanding personality layers), I calculate those separately. Full instructions with examples are on my how to calculate name number page.
Name Correction Explained
Name correction (or naam sudhar as many of my Hindi-speaking clients call it) means adjusting the spelling of your name so the new version produces a name number that aligns with your birth number (Mulank) and supports what you’re trying to achieve.
The changes are usually subtle—an extra letter, a doubled vowel, or a different transliteration that sounds the same when spoken. I had a client from Pune whose name reduced to 5 while her Mulank was 6. She was facing repeated career stalls. We changed just one letter—added an “a” at the end—and within three months, she was promoted.
Not everyone needs a legal name change. Many of my clients use the corrected spelling on visiting cards, social media, email signatures, and in daily introductions while keeping official documents unchanged. For the full process, benefits, and what to realistically expect, read my name correction guide.
Worked Example: Chaldean Name Number
Let me show you how I’d calculate a name like Riya Sharma using the Chaldean chart:
- R = 2, I = 1, Y = 1, A = 1 → Riya = 2+1+1+1 = 5
- S = 3, H = 5, A = 1, R = 2, M = 4, A = 1 → Sharma = 3+5+1+2+4+1 = 16 → 1+6 = 7
- Total: 5 + 7 = 12 → 1+2 = 3
So Riya Sharma’s name number is 3.
If Riya’s birth number were also 3, this name would be in perfect harmony. But if her Mulank were 4 or 8, I’d suggest exploring a name correction—perhaps “Riyaa Sharma” or a slight spelling adjustment—so the name number becomes compatible.
Worked Example: Pythagorean Name Number
Same name, Riya Sharma, but in Pythagorean (A=1, B=2, … I=9, J=1, …):
- R=9, I=9, Y=7, A=1 → Riya = 9+9+7+1 = 26 → 2+6 = 8
- S=1, H=8, A=1, R=9, M=4, A=1 → Sharma = 1+8+1+9+4+1 = 24 → 2+4 = 6
- Total: 8 + 6 = 14 → 1+4 = 5
Same name, different system, different number. This is exactly why I always tell my clients: pick one system (for Indian names, I recommend Chaldean) and stick with it for all your calculations—especially when doing name correction or choosing a lucky name.
Why Name Number Matters
Your name is spoken and written hundreds of times a day—in introductions, on documents, in your own mind. I’ve observed with my clients that the vibration of the name number affects:
- Personality and confidence – How you carry yourself in professional and social settings.
- Career and opportunities – When name number aligns with birth number, recognition and growth come more naturally.
- Relationships – I sometimes use name number compatibility alongside birth number compatibility for couples.
- Life challenges – A mismatched name number can create friction; name correction aims to smooth that out.
For babies, choosing a name whose number fits the birth number is the principle behind baby name numerology. For businesses, the same applies—see business name numerology: a business name that resonates with the owner’s numbers and the industry tends to build trust and momentum.
Lucky Names and Name Number
A lucky name is one whose name number is compatible with your birth number (Mulank) and destiny number (Bhagyank). I often explain to clients: there’s no single “lucky number” for everyone—what works depends on your specific chart. You can explore this in my lucky name guide. For new babies, baby name numerology helps parents shortlist names that resonate with the child’s Mulank. For businesses, business name numerology does the same for the venture and the owner.
Alphabet and Letter Values
The exact number assigned to each letter depends on the system you’re using. For a full letter-to-number reference, see my Chaldean chart and Pythagorean chart pages. For the role of vowels vs consonants (which I use for deeper personality insights), see alphabet numerology. These pages are essential if you want to calculate your name number yourself or understand how I arrived at a particular suggestion.
Summary and Next Steps
Name numerology uses the letters of your name to derive a name number that influences personality, opportunities, and success. In my practice, I prefer Chaldean for Indian names and name correction; Pythagorean is more common in the West and for life path calculations. Name correction adjusts your spelling so the new name number aligns with your birth number.

Chaldean vs Pythagorean in More Detail
Chaldean numerology comes from ancient Babylon and is sound-vibration based. Each letter is assigned a value from 1 to 8 (9 is reserved). Letters are grouped by phonetic quality, not alphabetical order—A, I, J, Q, and Y all equal 1 because of their sound. This makes it ideal for Indian names, where spellings vary (Sameer, Samir, Sameera all sound similar but spell differently) and compound sounds (Sh, Ch, Th, Dh) are common. When I do name correction, I use Chaldean so suggested spellings stay true to pronunciation while shifting the number. For the complete table, see my Chaldean numerology chart.
Pythagorean numerology follows a simple pattern: A=1, B=2, C=3, and so on in a repeating 1–9 cycle. It’s easy to learn and is the system most Western books use. Life path calculations from birth date also follow Pythagorean reduction. For Indian names, Pythagorean can produce different results than Chaldean for the same spelling, which is why I always tell clients to stick to one system consistently. The full Pythagorean chart is on its dedicated page.
Name Correction: When and Why
In my experience, people consider name correction when their name number doesn’t align with their birth number (Mulank) or when they face repeated obstacles despite hard work. I had a client from Chennai—a successful doctor—who felt something was always blocking her from the recognition she deserved. Her name number was 5 while her Mulank was 6. We adjusted one letter, and within six months, she received two prestigious awards.
Even a small spelling change can shift the name number. I calculate your current name number (usually in Chaldean for Indian names), compare it with your Mulank and Bhagyank, and suggest corrected spellings you can use on visiting cards, social media, and in daily life. Legal name change is optional. The full process and what to expect are in my name correction guide.
Understanding Name Numbers 1–9 (Quick Reference)
Here’s how I interpret each name number in my practice:
- 1: Leadership, independence, new beginnings. Strong for entrepreneurs and pioneers.
- 2: Cooperation, diplomacy, partnership. Good for teamwork and supportive roles.
- 3: Creativity, expression, communication. Suits arts, media, and teaching.
- 4: Stability, discipline, structure. Good for finance, construction, and systems.
- 5: Freedom, change, adaptability. Suits travel, sales, and dynamic fields.
- 6: Responsibility, care, harmony. Good for family, health, and service.
- 7: Analysis, wisdom, spirituality. Suits research, healing, and introspection.
- 8: Achievement, authority, material success. Strong for business and leadership.
- 9: Compassion, completion, universal appeal. Good for healing and humanitarian work.
Master numbers 11, 22, 33 carry intense energy and I interpret them separately. For name correction, the aim is to align your name number with your birth number or with one that supports your goals—the “best” number is personal, not universal.
Another Worked Example: Name Correction Scenario
Let’s say Arjun has birth number 6 (born on 6th, 15th, or 24th). In Chaldean: A=1, R=2, J=1, U=6, N=5 → 1+2+1+6+5 = 15 → 1+5 = 6. His name number already matches his Mulank—no correction needed.
But if his name spelled differently reduced to 5 or 8, and he was facing obstacles in stability or family matters (areas associated with 6), I might suggest a corrected spelling that sounds like “Arjun” but reduces to 6. The name correction page explains how I generate such options and how to implement them in daily use.

Frequently Asked Questions About Name Numerology
Find answers to common questions about name numbers, name correction, lucky names, and how name numerology works.
What is name numerology and how does it work?
Name numerology is the study of how the letters in your name influence your personality, destiny, and life opportunities. Each letter is assigned a number using the Chaldean or Pythagorean chart. The sum of all letter values gives your name number, which reveals your name's vibrational energy and its impact on your life.
How do I calculate my name number?
Write your full name, convert each letter to its number using the Chaldean or Pythagorean chart, add all numbers together, and reduce to a single digit (1-9) unless it's a Master Number (11, 22, 33). For Indian names, the Chaldean system is recommended as it's based on sound vibrations.
Should I use Chaldean or Pythagorean for my name?
For Indian names, Chaldean numerology is preferred because it handles complex sounds like Sh, Ch, Dh, and Th better. For Western names, Pythagorean works well. For name correction and business names in India, always use Chaldean for the most accurate results.
What is name correction in numerology?
Name correction is the practice of modifying your name's spelling to achieve a more favorable name number that aligns with your birth number (Mulank) and destiny number (Bhagyank). Even a small change—like adding or changing a letter—can shift your name's vibration and improve your luck, career, and relationships.
How do I choose a lucky name for my baby?
First, calculate your baby's birth number (Mulank) from the date of birth. Then find name numbers that are compatible with the birth number. Use the Chaldean chart to test potential names. The ideal baby name has a favorable number, positive meaning, pleasant sound, and works well with the surname.
Can name numerology improve my business?
Yes, a business name with a favorable numerology number can attract customers, build trust, and support financial growth. Numbers 1 (leadership), 6 (service), and 9 (universal appeal) are generally good for businesses. The ideal number depends on the owner's birth number and the industry type.
Does changing my name legally matter for numerology?
Legal change is not required. Using the corrected name in daily life—on social media, business cards, email signatures, and when people call you—is enough to activate the new vibration. However, a legal change makes the correction permanent and complete.
What is the difference between vowel number and consonant number?
Vowels (A, E, I, O, U) represent your inner self, desires, and emotions—this is your Soul Number. Consonants represent your outer personality and how others perceive you—this is your Personality Number. The total of all letters gives your full Name Number or Expression Number.
How long does name correction take to show results?
Most people notice a shift in confidence and mindset within a few weeks. Tangible changes in career, relationships, and finances typically appear within 3-6 months. Significant life transformation may take 1-2 years of consistently using the corrected name in all aspects of life.
Can I have different lucky names for different purposes?
Yes, some people use different names for different purposes—a professional name for career, a spiritual name for personal growth, and their legal name for official documents. Each name carries its own vibration. A numerologist can help you choose names that serve your goals in each area.
